The 2021 Northeast Cup will be the 18th edition of the football competition held in the Brazilian Northeast, organized by the Northeast League in partnership with the CBF.
As in the previous edition, the nine states of the region will have representatives in the tournament, but the selection of participants will be different. The tournament will have the participation of 20 teams, 12 of which will qualify directly for a group stage and 8 will qualify for a preliminary knockout stage, which will give 4 places in the group stage. The teams classified directly to the group stage will be the 9 state champions in 2020, together with the teams from the states of Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco best positioned in the 2020 National Club Ranking, excluding the state champions in the respective states. The teams classified to the preliminary phase will be: the second placed in the National Ranking of Clubs from Pernambuco (two best ranked states), in addition to the first placed from the other states of the region (except Ceará), State champions in each state were excluded from the count. In the state of Bahia, the 3rd representative will be the club that has the best placement in the state, excluding the clubs present in the 1st and 2nd vacancies. If the club in the 1st place is not playing in Series A or B of the Brazilian Championship, then the 3rd place in Bahia will be allocated to the club with the second best position in the CBF National Club Ranking.
