About this game

Hnefatafl is an ancient Scandinavian board game whose variants were played all over medieval Europe before chess was even invented. In those so called Tafl games two different sized armies fight each other. The invading black army tries to capture the white king, while the defending white army tries to protect their king and help him escape.

Often also called the Game of the Vikings Hnefatafl tells many stories, like the Moskowites invasion of Sweden or the Viking hordes pillaging Britain. But no matter what the story is one thing always stays the same: The hunt for the king.

Even though the rules aren't complicated the game offers fascinating strategies and rewards tactical play. Try to surround the enemy pieces, plan ahead, lay traps and force your opponent into surrender. Will you capture the king for gold and glory? Can the loyal guards hold back the invading forces and secure the flight of their king?

For offline and online play you can create your own custom variants -- with over 200,000 different variants possible!

The game features cross platform play with iOS, Windows and Linux and you can use a single account to access all your matches from any of your devices. The multiplayer is asynchronous so you can continue your matches whenever you want.

Update: developer was right, after making sure a confirm email went to my inbox and not spam I then got the link with instructions. I'm glad this worked because I do like this app and like how customizable this game is with everything including the rule variants. Wanted to create an account but the email it sent me to confirm my email only contained an attachment file. No instructions or anything else, just an attachment. Yeah, that's a hard no. Not going to download some bug onto my phone.

The email is digitally signed to pass spam filters which might have been somehow garbled on the way to you. If you send an email to support@fellhuhn.com I can manually unlock your account.

A bug I've found is that if you set the AI time limit to unlimited and then during a match you change the time limit to anything other than unlimited, the AI makes moves super quickly, there is like less than 2 seconds between each move. This leads to a bunch of random moves that don't make sense and sometimes they repeat moves and draw the game. I avoid this by just not using the unlimited setting. Other than that this game is perfect to me.

I'm not a fan of the redesign. I liked the simplicity of the old one. However, the AI is slowly improving. With that said, Ansgar is a little freaking cheater!! I took screenshots of him putting captured pieces back on the board, capturing my pieces by jumping on them (like chess), and even moving my King!! Still, it's fun. The varieties of the game really make it so you won't get bored.

Due to some performance improvements the AI accessed memory which it shouldn't have access to. That should be fixed with version 3.18. If there is anything particular that you preferred in the old version send me a note and I will see if we can find a compromise. Keep on tafling.

What's new

Long Clicking (or right clicking) an offline match in the main menu will now offer the option to rename matches.
Added the option to always display the remaining time in an online match that has a timeout set. This was previously only available for quick matches.
Updated the translations.
When searching for opponents for new online matches the ignore button now also works.
When using the "Next Match" button it will now respect the selected order for online matches.
