The Bible of Cassiodoro de Reina; Known as the "Bear Bible" it was published in Basel, Switzerland on September 28, 1569. This work has the figure of a bear on the cover that is standing next to a tree. This Bible is translated directly from the original Hebrew and Greek texts.
Apart from the original text and the Latin versions, when making his translation Casiodoro de Reina had in view the previous works of Valdés (for example, his Psalms in Spanish), of Enzinas, and of Pérez de (la) Pineda, as well as the Ferrariense Bible.
In the 1569 translation Reina used the latest advances in biblical science. For example, he used the division of the New Testament into verses, which had been introduced in print only a few years earlier (1550), and lamented that a new Peshita publication had arrived too late to take into account.
This work has been subjected to many revisions, such as that of Mr. Valera, a friend of Reina, who made the first revision and then many others. The last one in 1995 by United Bible Societies. It is currently known as the Reina-Valera Bible.
