Before making his prayer, the Muslim must perform his ablutions in order to purify himself and thus be able to perform the act of prayer. Ablutions must be done with pure water (tap water for example), not soapy. Pure earth (or a flat stone) can also be used when it is necessary to pray in a medium without water, it is called the "Tayamoum" act.
