According to biblical tradition, Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the Tablets of the Law. He was at Sinai for forty days, until he received from God, either in fact or by divine inspiration, two tablets of stone written with his finger. According to the story, when he came down from the mountain, Moses saw the people who were worshiping a golden calf and broke them. Later, he asked God to forgive the people and seal a "covenant" with him. Then, the Lord commanded Moses to take two slabs of stone, and in them were written the Ten Commandments of the covenant, rebuking him that "they must not tolerate disobedience."
