The inventor of puzzles is considered to be John Spilsbury, who, as a member of the Royal Geographical Society in England in the 18th century, glued an image with a map of England and Wales on plywood and sawed it into pieces by county boundaries in order to diversify geography lessons for his students. In 1766, this map was issued under the title Map of England and Wales, Divided into Counties. John Spilsbury receives a patent for his invention and opens a trade in wooden puzzles, a store he calls Cartographers and Map Cutters on Wood. His cut-up wooden maps become the new geography textbook. Over the next two years, D. Spilsbury develops similar maps of Europe, Asia, America, Ireland, and Scotland. One of these geographic puzzles is in the British Museum.
To collect puzzles of that time was not easy: places of connection of elements were rather rough, elements themselves were not fastened to each other and at any careless movement broke off, besides manufacturers did not enclose pictures to their puzzles and one had to collect only by names on elements. To top it all off, wooden puzzles were very expensive, and for a long time they remained a mere social pastime. Thanks to the invention of stamping technology on cardboard in the late 19th century, the first cardboard puzzles appeared. They became incredibly popular in Europe and the U.S., and gradually superseded wooden puzzles.
