The holiday of Baba Marta in Bulgarian traditions is a symbol of spring and brings a wish for health and fertility at the beginning of the new cycle in nature. The tradition is related to ancient pagan history from the Balkan Peninsula, related to all agricultural nature cults. Some of the most specific features of the March 1st rite, and especially the tying of the twisted white and red woolen threads, are the fruit of a centuries-old tradition that was inherent in Thracian (Paleo-Balkan) and Hellenic customs.
