Oktoih (Greek Octoechos Osmoglasnik), one of the main liturgical books of the Orthodox Church. Contains variable chants for the so-called moving days of the week (weekly) lap. The liturgical succession of each weekly day includes the songs of Vespers, Compline, Matins and Liturgy, and on Sundays, in addition, the chants of the small Vespers and Midnight Festivals.
All the chants contained in the successions of one week are performed in the same voice, the number of which (eight) the book got its title. After completing a cycle of eight weeks, the chanting of the Oktoih begins again with the chants of the first voice. The cycle of eight weeks is called a “pillar” in the Church Charter, six of them are sung during the year: 1) from the first week of Petrova Lent, 2) after Elijah of the day, 3) by the Elevation of the Cross of the Lord, 4) in the Nativity Post, 5) by the Baptism of the Lord , 6) in Lent. Oktoih's singing on weekdays begins on Monday after All Saints Week and ends before the Saturday of Myasopust; on Sundays, it begins on the first Sunday after All Saints Week and lasts until the fifth week of Great Lent inclusive. Okotiih is not sung on the Great Seasons, as well as their celebrations and afternoons, falling on weeks.
Memories of certain faces of saints or sacred events are connected with each week in Okotih: Sunday chants are devoted to the remembrance of the Resurrection of Christ, Monday chants have a penitential character, and also chant the holy angels, Tuesday chants, and the penitent Hrakter praise St. John the Baptist, the chants of the environment and Fridays are dedicated to the Cross and the Mother of God, Thursday to the apostles and Saint Nicholas, the Sabbath with all the saints and the departed.
