Since January 2015, the Health Area of ​​Menorca, Balearic Islands, has been part of the project of Centers Committed to Excellence in Care (BPSO, Best Practice Spotlight Organization) with the support of INVESTEN-ISCIII, with the aim of implementing, among others, Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) “Guidelines of Good Practice” (GBP) “Assessment and Selection of Vascular Access Devices”
Intravenous therapy is intended to use a venous line for therapeutic purposes, limiting complications and obtaining maximum performance. It is a nursing procedure whose interventions are reflected in the Classification of Nursing Interventions -NIC-
In order to reduce the complications associated with intravenous therapy and to achieve the greatest therapeutic benefit, Nursing must take into account some considerations:
First, that to administer any type of intravenous treatment it is necessary to puncture a vein, by means of a needle, in a anatomical area that should be selected based on the indicated treatment and the characteristics and preferences of the patient.
Secondly, that intravenous therapy implies the correct administration of the prescribed solutions or drugs.
Third, that the complications associated with intravenous therapy can be considerably reduced by applying quality care to the insertion site, the skin, the catheter, and the infusion sets.
Lastly, that intravenous therapy is also associated with the strict observance of care aimed not only at controlling the infection but also at protecting the patient against it.
IV Therapy App (Intravenous Therapy) The nurses behind the implementation of the GBP at the Mateu Orfila Hospital in Maó, Menorca, have designed this application for mobile devices (App) as a tool to facilitate the implementation of the GBP.
It includes content designed by the group of promoters during the first months of implementation (decision algorithm, CVC request circuit, updated protocols, nursing consultation, list of drugs with pH and osmolarity) and links to pages of interest in intravenous therapy.
We believe that the use of this App will allow us to bring scientific evidence to the "bedside" and will be a very useful tool for nurses.
