The Competition Council's mission with regard to the optimal functioning of the markets for the retail sale of food products and motor fuels, as well as with regard to the manifestation of competition in these markets, was and still remains focused on two main directions.
The first of these is represented by monitoring the functioning of market mechanisms. This activity has the role of detecting possible deviations/violations of legal regulations, and, if there is conclusive evidence in this regard, to sanction the responsible companies.
The second direction of action of the competition authority aims to stimulate competition in the food and fuel retail markets, as well as to improve the competitive climate, in order to obtain advantages for end consumers.
Price competition is an important feature of the market economy, having the role of generating both economic efficiency and important benefits for consumers, including a varied offer of quality products at competitive prices.
The competition authority does not have the competence to intervene in the formation of sales prices of companies active on a specific market or to regulate a level of these prices. However, the Competition Council is constantly fighting for the well-being of the final consumer, by remedying any dysfunctions in a certain sector.
The price monitor takes into account the fact that the price is not the only criterion for evaluating a product, being supplemented by elements such as: the type and quality of services available, the quality and quantity of auxiliary information available to the consumer, the quality of the product itself, , post assistance -sale and, last but not least, the consumer's decision regarding the origin, brand or presentation of the product. For this purpose, the information will be presented in a way that allows the evaluation of these additional elements, without, however, turning the platform into an advertising channel.
