The Colo-Colo Social and Sports Club is a sports institution based in the city of Santiago, Chile, whose main activity is professional soccer. It was founded on April 19, 1925 by a group of ex-soccer players from Club Deportivo Magallanes, led by David Arellano, and has been administered since 2005 by the Blanco y Negro corporation under a concession system.
The colors that identify it are white and black, which it has used in its uniform since its foundation. With regard to its shield, it has presented the colors of the Chilean flag since its origins, and in 1950 it incorporated the figure of a Mapuche male as its main emblem. Since Arellano's death in Spain in 1927, in the midst of the club's international tour, the shirt has a crepe, a horizontal black ribbon, which represents the institution's eternal mourning for the departure of its founder.
It began its soccer activity in the year of its constitution as part of the Metropolitan League, in which it remained for two seasons. After the reunification of the governing federations of Chilean soccer in 1926, it joined the Central Football League, renamed the Santiago Football Association in 1930. Since 1933, when together with eight teams they founded the then Professional Football League, it has participated in the highest category of Chilean soccer, and it is the only club that has played in all the editions of the First Division since its creation.
At the national level, with 32 First Division titles, 12 in the Copa Chile and two in the Super Cup, it is the club with the most titles in the country. Internationally, in 1991 it became the first and only Chilean team to win the Copa Libertadores, and in 1992 it was proclaimed champion of the Recopa Sudamericana and the Inter-American Cup. He organized the South American Champions Championship in 1948, which inspired the creation of the European Champions Cup in 1955 and the Copa Libertadores itself in 1960. His first team
plays its home matches at the Monumental Stadium, located in the commune of Macul, in the southeast sector of Santiago, and which has a capacity of 47,347 spectators. Its traditional rival is the University of Chile, against which it disputes the so-called "Chilean soccer classic".
