December 31st is called New Year's Eve. But where does this name come from and why do we celebrate New Year's Eve? This is actually not a Christian festival, but has pagan roots. The ancient Germans believed that
their god Wotan did bad things during the dark season, i.e. between December 25th and January 6th. They especially feared New Year's Eve, so they made a lot of noise to drive away the darkness and evil spirits.
That's why we're doing fireworks now, it goes back to that old tradition. Even before 1582 the last day of the year was not December 31st
but December 24th. This year it was moved to December 31, the anniversary of the Pope's death, Silvester.
Most people love New Year's Eve and the turn of the year because it offers the opportunity to start something new. Sure, you can do this any day of the year, but somehow it's easier to start fresh with the new year.
